Should a blogger long to be a columnist?

Eric Zorn -- who says he "felt like a slacker sharing the stage" with me last night -- compares blogging and column-writing. He does both, so maybe he's not biased. Of course, everyone blogs, and only a few people have newspaper columns...

I started writing columns in the late 90's because I wanted to be a columnist. After a year and half of getting no interest (well, I got interest but no one wanted to pay me) I got the hint. Now I write just because I have to with no ulterior motives.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with a blogger wanting to be a columnist. The up side is you spend more effort in everything from sourcing to editing and spelling.

I'm of the minority that not only do I want to Blog, but I want to write a column. I am in the midst of a book right now (non-fiction). My posts are lengthy, but detailed. If I had a column, my words would reach more people.
