"Check in the hotel, Breck Girl, don't just go in there for a couple hours of quickies and leave at 2:40 in the morning."

"Check in, pal. Leave at a normal time. Not that I'm an expert, don't misunderstand."

I'll bet while he was hiding out in the men's room and waiting for hotel security to rescue him, he stood at the mirror and fluffed his hair.

An accusation of classlessness, that surely smarts for a class action lawyer.

Forget the sex scandal... I truly can't believe that the video of him primping didn't end his career long ago.

I wonder how Ms Marcotte is taking this news!

And some Democrats were honestly considering Edwards as the nominee for the Democratic Party--although given what they have produced, I guess I would prefer to have a skirt chaser in office; I mean Bill Clinton didn't do that bad.

KCFleming said...

As long as Edwards wasn't tapping his foot in the stall, this was not a news item.

Edwards should go all Tony Manero on Rush, saying "Don’t touch the hair!"

Sharon said...

Love the "Don't touch the hair!" comment.

So this guy is a fraud. That's news?

knox said...

Well, "fraud," though accurate, isn't the first word that comes to mind...

He should sit down with Senator Vitter and get some pointers. Although Vitter got caught too. Hmm...

C'mon, National Enquirer, I want pics! I want a shot of Edwards peeping out of the men's room. My schadenfreude won't be complete without pictures!

It is weird that Big Media is covering for this guy. Hey, knuckleheads, I know one of you is reading this: think about it. What does this guy offer you? He's a nobody, a has-been trial lawyer. He's nearly the Democratic equivalent of Harold Stassen for crying out loud.

Throw him overboard. There is a benefit. Next time we conservatives gripe that you are sickeningly and grotesquely unfair in your coverage, you can point to how you boldly printed the truth about John Edwards, "at a time when he was under consideration for the vice presidential nomination or a high-level cabinet post," you'll add in your serious tone.

What's it cost you? Nothing. Edwards couldn't be on the board of a medium-sized community college at this point.

Make that Ann, Rush Limbaugh, and the National Enquirer are covering this. And while you guys are talking about alien love children, Kossacks are pounding the phones, raising more money, and putting more Dems in power. So, as you were!

Roger J. said...

Garage: were I a bit more cynical than normal, I would submit one reason kossacks can do all the you mention is because they arent being distracted by a good sex scandal!

Me? I hope the NI got some photos for publication--can't believe they wouldn't have had a photog along.

My only other big question is how did Pamela Anderson manage that arm transplant.

I have no liking for Edwards, but I really feel that this whole story and people reveling in it is very distateful.

While I can have as much schadenfreude about some things as the next person and sort of enjoy the idea of Edwards hiding in a bathroom stall (hee hee), I have a great deal of sympathy for Elizabeth Edwards who is suffering and probably dying from cancer. This is tough enough without becoming an object of pity and being shown to the world as a jilted spouse. Now that he isn't running for President or VP and has no chance of ever doing so again, can we give it a rest?

Have some decency people.

See.....we didn't need Cyrus at all.

Larry Craig's spouse has not suffered.

Garage -- Interesting non sequiter. I'm sure it made sense to you.

And, of course, Democrats aren't trumpeting the outrage du jour. Never. And Republicans aren't raising any money. Except, wait, they're all rich fat cats. Except, wait, they're poor hillbillies in Appalachia.

Yeah I agree with Seven Machos.

I'd like to be the fly on the wall during the news and editorial meetings when the MSM group-thinkers decide this story does not merit a mention.

What if Elizabeth Edwards, wanting him to select a good stepmother for the two little ones, cut him loose? She was on The Colbert Report [third segment, you have to sit through a few ads] just last week, looking pretty good, hawking her book 'Saving Graces.' What if this is a ploy to get her sympathy book sales?

Maybe it's just me, but a woman who will sleep with a married man doesn't strike me as good stepmother material. So I rather doubt this was done to engender sympathy sales, but a good capitalist would capitalize on the series of events to boost sales.

Yes - If its in the National Enquirer, it must be true. How dare the media not cover it.

Never mind that what he's being accused of is not illegal, he does not hold public office, he's not running for public office, and he's a private citizen.

Unknown said...

The media should cover this story and hound him UNTIL HE RESIGNS GOD DAMN IT!

Resign from what I'm not sure exactly - Nevermind!

Roger J. said...

DTL notes: "Never mind that what he's being accused of is not illegal, he does not hold public office, he's not running for public office, and he's a private citizen."

You had me convinced until you got to your last term: He is most definitely not a private citizen--he is a public citizen. Were he a private citizen, I would agree entirely.

James said...

Gotta love how everybody is jumping on this as if it were clear that it was true. Ok, let's recap:

National Enquirer, sleazy tabloid that employs countless paparazzi, is able to track Edwards down to a hotel, sees him entering. Then they wait until 2:40 in the morning, and when he leaves through the basement, they have multiple people waiting for him. He runs around like a panicked deer for a while, then according to the story, is cornered in a bathroom stall for 15 minutes. After this, a group of hotel security come and escort him past the Enquirer people. All of this . . .

. . . WITHOUT A SINGLE PICTURE OR VIDEO? The Enquirer somehow manages to go through all of this without a single picture or video? You think that is believable?

KCFleming said...

DTL is hilarious. He was all over the Larry Craig stuff.

Edwards was being talked about for Veep or AG, so this matters.

Oh, yeah. It wasn't gay sex, so DTL doesn't care, right?
Or wait, it wasn't Republican gay sex, so DTL doesn't care, right?

Roger J. said...

James--let me propose an idea for you: What if the NI has photos but is holding them as a kind of insurance policy against a law suit? They are dealing with a trial lawyer you know. And given their experience with being sued, I suspect they have a pretty good team of lawyers on their side. I suggest we take our lead from Edward's actions--Lets see if he sues.

Unknown said...

That's how much of an anti-gay bigot Pogo is. He can't distinguish between legal, consensual sex (that there is zero proof even happened) and illegal, non-consensual, sexual harassment for which Larry Craig was arrested and plead guilty to.

Unknown said...

I know another politician who cheated on his ailing, sick wife (whom he subsequently dumped)

He also happens to the Republican nominee for President.

Why isn't the media covering that story????

James said...

Roger

What reason would they have for holding on the photos? In addition to actually getting some level of credibility for the story (hell, it would be essentially the biggest tabloid-type scoop of the year, instead of just another pile of crap from the Enquirer) it would preempt any sort of lawsuit. Why would they wait until after a lawsuit has been filed, (and after they start paying the legal fees) to finally bring out the photographs?

Roger J. said...

James--good points--guess I would make a better blackmailer than a tabloid publisher. If they didn't get photos, they missed a good opportunity. Photos notwithstanding, and assuming their article is reasonably factual, there seem to be serveral witnesses to the procedings including the security detail that supposedly had to escort Edwards from the bathroom. I guess time will tell.

Odd that Rush would say that. What would he know about a hotel rendezvous? His preference is to go trolling for street tail in the DR.

NI got it wrong. It wasn't John Edwards, it was Britney Spears. They just look alike.

KCFleming said...

DTL, I can always count on you for a laugh. What a putz.

Craig was of course charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct (whatever that means ...apparently gay and bisexual guys can't cruise for love in public ...who knew?), not sexual harassment.

Did a recent Presidential candidate named Edwards cheat on his dying wife and have a baby out of wedlock?
We'll find out soon enough.

But spare me the whining, DTL, you don't give a shit about whether it's proven or legal or anything of the sort. You only care about whose ox is gored.

Let me tell you.
Edwards gored that ox.

Roger J. said...

Pogo--I didn't realize that goring that ox was the medical term for coitus. Damn--must be why you are pediatrician and not a urologist.

Well it's easy to confuse them because they have the same silky hair cut, just in different places.

Edwards lover had an oxish look in that unfortunate photo.
'Goring' has both the penetration and the AlGore references going for it.

And I'm no pediatrician.
I'm way at the other end.
If I went any further, I'd be doing autopsies.

Does Theo Boehm have a crush on me? Consider the evidence:

BTW, how was the trip down from Santa Barbara?

I've never mentioned in ANY posts at Althouse that I live in Santa Barbara. Should I be flattered that Theo went to such great effort to discover and remember where I live? Creepy stalker behavior or serious puppy love...you decide!

Hey, it's Mandy, right on schedule!

It strikes me as more than a little odd that Theo likes to pretend that I'm a woman. If that's what it takes for Theo to inflate his tire, fine, but maybe he should check out his local mental health club for good measure.

Or maybe you've saved all my old comments so you could pour lovingly over them. I hope you're not touching yourself while you do so.

Theo's got a bad case of projection going here. Poor Theo. Apparently he's forgotten that, as always, he summoned me:

The deal clincher will be when Cyrus shows up...

Considering that I rarely comment here nowadays, it's nice to be so fondly remembered by Theo. Apparently he just can't stop thinking about me and typing my name.

In conclusion, the facts are these:

- Theo searchs for and collects personal information about me

- Theo likes to pretend that I'm a woman

- Theo feels compelled to mention my name in his posts

In Theo's world, this is evidence of my obsession with him. In the real world, it looks a lot more like Theo is infatuated.

Cyrus Pinkerton said...

Yes, YOU a Law Professor! Quoting the National Enquirer! I'm shocked, I say! Shocked!

Not even close. Althouse links to Limbaugh's website, and even Rush doesn't quote the National Enquirer story.

You might want to check the definition of "quote" for future reference.

Cyrus Pinkerton said...

Hey Trooper!

How does it feel to have the second best team (out of two) in New York?

You have to admit, any team that puts Sid Ponson in the rotation must be awfully desperate. Since joining the Yankees, Ponson's WHIP is 1.72; compare that to the WHIP of Livian Hernandez (1.58) who is on pace to give up over 300 hits this year.

Still, the Yankees have the absolutely best third place team that money can buy.

Poor Theo. You claimed that Althouse quoted the National Enquirer. Of course, she did no such thing. She quoted Rush Limbaugh and linked to his website. It's the kind of distinction that even moderately intelligent young readers readily make. I'm sorry you don't understand the difference. It must be quite a struggle for you.
