"McCain’s parting words to her — an admonition that she not ally herself with 'Limbaugh and the other extremists'..."

"... is perhaps the most gruesomely ironic line of dialogue delivered down the somewhat arduous home stretch."

If it hadn't been for the collapse of Lehman Bros., McCain would have won and the selection of Sarah Palin would have been the reason. There's your Game Change.

Imagine some highly talented and very rich people who have an unreasonable hatred toward you got together with millions of dollars and made a movie about you.

And McCain is clueless, and likely said exactly that.

McCain thinks believing in small govt = extremism? I can't believe I gave money to his prez campaign.

I was following Palin and was impressed long before she was chosen for VP. Her story really is impressive and inspiring when fairly told.

I think she had a huge positive impact on some voters that was equal to the negative one she had on others, and so a wash.

I also don't think Obama could have lost against anyone. The optics were all that mattered and they were powerful to a huge number of people.

Another Republican ticket might have have done a little better, but Obama was a shoe-in in 08.

The only good "maverick" is the establishment insider who has contempt for those authentically conservative outsiders, as well as having Capt. Queeg-like contempt for George W. Bush for some perceived slight years ago, such that he is going to make it his life's mission to obstruct and impede anything that Bush might have wanted to do (and thus have a more conservative presidency).

Yea, perfect for you. The current real disaster in progress in your country is almost invisible lately in the press.

Why do you think we are going back to 2008 right now? Maybe 2012 isn't so hope and changey. What do you do after you hope and change trillions and it does nothing. We don't have another bottle of that in the medicine cabinet. All that's left is diet and exercise.

BTW, did you really fall for that infomercial in 2008?

I mean, I can understand voting for the non-Republican after 8 years of war and overspending, but "Hope and Change"? Really?

"Make 6 figures working only 10 hours a week from home. 1 800 old - lies".

Yes, because everybody knows that spending less than you take in is extreme.

Criticizing the left is extreme too.

after reading the revies on slate and nyt the take away is:
1-mccain would have been far better as president than obama
2-palin is a quick study and would have been better prepared for the job than obama on day one and still would be.
3-the libs can't help themselves.

shiloh your stupid snark aside, obama's comments on rush only point out yet again what a light weight he is. conclusion: rush would make a better president than obama and obama would be worse as a talk show entertainer than rush.

and since obama won't give back maher's money ( he can ask the superpac to do so indirectly) just demonstrates he is a bigger whore than fluke.

If only McCain had been elected... there was so much he wanted to do. Amnesty, war with Iran, war with Syria, war with Russia, war with Venezuela, TARP, appointing "non-extremist" judges like Kennedy, reaching across the aisle, cutting deals with Reid on Healthcare and taxes, appointing Lieberman his AG, and Goober (R-SC) head of DoD.

What a great man...America you truly missed your chance.

Limbaugh/Palin 2012!

Yes, I'm serious. You know you would love to see that. They probably couldn't win, because they would be so devastating to Obama that he'd win out of overwhelming sympathy, but I'd love to see that dynamo administration. It would be damned interesting to watch. Presidential politics has such boring personalities lately.

That reviewer seems to have a really strong love/hate thing going on with Palin.

The only thing rc got right was bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.

He forgot:

no apology tour

no sellout of our gains in Iraq and A-stan

no JuniorCare

no GM bailout

no huge deficits

no stimulus

And Lieberman would be a Hell of a lot better than Holder.

I watched Morning Joe this morning and they all seemed to be admiring and sympathizing with Palin. I suspect HBO has asked the MSM to downplay the movie's portrayal of Pain as a dope in the hope that viewers, other than just libs, might tune in and watch it. I am not falling for this ploy and will not watch it.

The world does not work this way. HBO doesn't address the MSM, in this case TV reviewers, and tell them how to review a movie. Even if it's liberal-on-liberal, this would be considered completely out of bounds, and something HBO wouldn't dare try.

From the reviews I've read, it sounds to me like Palin fans might have jumped the gun in their assessment that this movie would be a hit job. It sounds to me like the real (albeit sympathetically portrayed) villain of the piece is Steven Schmidt, who is also near the top of Palin's hate list. The LA Times review I read this morning suggested that it was the sudden, unvetted selection of the talented but unprepared Palin that ruined both her and the McCain campaign. If Palin had been targeted sooner and given a chance to bone up on campaign issues as well as areas where she wasn't really properly educated, she would have been even more of an asset -- that's what the review says. The pivotal issue in the story seems to be that she was chosen for shallow, cynical reasons, and had to endure the consequences, including Schmidt turning on her. Do Palin fans deny that?

Conservatives need to understand something about both journalism and the entertainment business. Ideology matters to those folks, to be sure. It informs their world-view and their choices. But ultimately, they are in the business of selling stories, and for that reason an engaging story trumps ideology. Sounds like that might be what happened here.

And, dig it, HBO did not tell me to write this.

If one reads the NY Times first thing in the morning, or if one lives/ works on an elite campus one is likely to think that Limbaugh is an extremist. The world looks rather different when judged from the American political spectrum as a whole. From that perspective, one sees that Derrick Bell is an extremist. But from inside the legal academy, he's not that far out of the mainstream.

"Rendition" lost about $18M. It was followed by

"Lions for Lambs", which lost about $20M,

"Stop Loss", which lost about $10M,

"Fair Game", which lost about $11M, and

"Green Zone", which lost about $70M.

"The Passion of the Christ" earned a profit of over $340M, making Mel Gibson richer than the title character's father. Its source material was just an excerpt from one of a large collection of stories, all of which are in the public domain. In the eight years since its release, how many other Biblical movies have been made?

If you can judge a person by the qualities of their enemies, that would make Palin absolute gold.

John Stodder- I have the utmost respect for you and your opinions. But it was just way too unanimous this morning on Morning Joe - their words virtually matched the review you just cited almost word for word. Someone has planted this synopsis and is dishing it out to all "oh she just wasn't ready to be VP - maybe if she had more time".

bgates,

You'd be better mentioning "Act of Valor", which was very much a pro-military movie. It's +4 million right now (49 mill on a 45 mill budget). I'm not sure how it'll do internationally.

The movie had a good plot. The acting was terrible but the action was great. What do you expect with the acting though, these guys aren't actors, and real military guys use terse, low emotive language. They really blew it with the editting though, you had no impression of how much time passed between "scenes" except for three short shots of the pregnant wife (no bump, big bump, no bump) during the course of the movie.

Yep, and he wanted no withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan on top of that because the "Noble Iraqis and Noble Afghan Freedom Lovers" would be imperiled by losing the gains "The Heroes under by dear friend Gen Petraeus made". We "owed it" the Iraqis and Afghans to stay, according to McCain.

McCain also mentioned the Neeeeeed! to attack Lebanon if we attacked Syria and Iran "for Our Special Friend"....Burma was on his eternal wars of adventure target list, he also thought The Heroes might be needed in Central Africa, Haiti, Yemen, and possibly back to Somalia again.

When not talking about the dozen new wars Johnny wanted for new Neocon adventure...he was proposing that we borrow 500 billion dollars to give to wealthy homeowners, real estate speculators, and of course...low income people that had bought too much mansion in California, Las Vegas, Florida, etc.

Right, so instead we got an illegal war in Libya, Pakistan, probably Syria, and... how many African countries now (oh, right, you wouldn't know about that because the media doesn't report when Obama sends "special military advisors" to central African nations), and selling bunker busters to Israel.

Bad wars? We're still playing the game of Risk, it's just that our attack vectors went in another direction.

Heck, you're still campaigning against McCain while Obama's waging war on American citizens abroad... sure, we gotta give the foreign ones a civilian trial, but the citizens we can just blast from orbit.

But go ahead, put your head in the sand and keep believing in the dumb propaganda that conservatives are warmongers and liberals are peace-loving angels. Sure, Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize--surely that credential means something, right?

A lot of Dems would love to see that, that's for sure. Myself, I would be saddened to see what's become of the GOP.

The entire political system is pretty sad anyway right now. I may not vote. That's not the fault of a single person or even a single party. It's the process that seems to have gone bad.

That anyone - anyone - gives Palin, Limbaugh or any of the other talkingheads of hate the time of day is enough to make any thinking person afraid for this country and the world.

The fact that so many people are sent salivating at the mere mention of their names is proof positive of the evolutionary (and devolutionary in these cases) origins of the human species.
