Where we were when we were not in Madison.

Untitled

We were in Lincoln, Nebraska.

For the National Amputee Golf Open Championship, cheering on the Meade family member who comments on this blog as "The Elder" (previously highlighted in this 2010 post).

Lincoln is a fine American city, like Madison, a capital city, and though we are big fans of the state capitol buildings, we skipped that building this time, because we were there in January 2012. Remember those pictures? Instead we got our fix of state capitolosity as we drove home today, via I-80, stopping in Des Moines, Iowa. I have some nice Iowa Capitol pictures, but I'm going to put them in a separate post.

Would be honored to buy you both dinner, or lunch, or drinks (or whatever meal is appropriate) next time you're in Lincoln.

Some fine places in the Haymarket where your pictures are from including one of my favorite bars in the Hide and Fur building.

Madison has always felt like the Bizzaro-World version of Lincoln to me (or vice verse depending on your preferred perspective.)

Thanks, Coldstream. We're not there now, though.

We ate dinner at Dish, and it was very nice. Our bartender/waiter looked like Orson Welles in "Citizen Kane."

And we had a nice breakfast at Cup & Bread.

Nebraskans sure are friendly. And many drive big trucks. I mean huge.

1. Corn: Corn is looking good here in Indiana too--- My husband's aunt, who farms, says it's a huge relief after last years horrendous drought.

And we spent yesterday at the Indiana State fair, where the theme for the year was..... Indiana's role in the Popcorn Industry.

2. We once drove from Rockford, Illinois to Nebraska with friends (for a graduation.) They warned us that Iowa would be especially dull, but we really liked it. The rolling hills, cute little towns every few miles, and pretty farmland was actually pretty interesting scenery. My one regret was that we were on a strict schedule, and couldn't stop and explore. I'd really like to give Iowa a try some day.....

3. We recently moved back to Southern Indiana, but on the West side of the state.... I'd assumed that all of Southern Indiana went for Cincinnati, but apparently there's some magic line you cross where St. Louis becomes the team of choice.... I wonder where, exactly, the line is.

Do the participants in the golf tournament play against each other straight up, or do they compete against similarly "equipped" players (one-handed golfers against one-handed golfers, etc.)?

Everyone I saw was missing one limb, either an arm or a leg, and they competed against each other. The degree of what was missing varied from person to person, and one man we watched — read about him here — was missing so much of an arm that he swung the club with one arm. By contrast, The Elder has a prosthesis that lets him use both arms. Also in the foursome were 2 men who each had a lower leg prosthesis.

Lincoln is a charming place. College towns usually are.
