We put in many hours of hard spectating at yesterday's Ironman Wisconsin in Madison.

The swimming began in Lake Monona at 7 a.m. and we biked out there to see what we could:

P1140852

The paddle boarders had a nice view, and so did the people who got a higher sight line from Monona Terrace:

P1140868

The swimmers got their bikes up in those ramps and came out the other end onto the street that goes along next to the bike trail that is our usual bike trail, so we biked alongside them — us on the trail and them in the street — until they had to make a sharp turn at Wingra Creek...

P1140879

... and we went along our way, completing the 20+-mile Capital City trail. Stowing our bikes at home, we set out on foot, walking over towards Lake Mendota to catch the Ironmen and -women in their running phase, up on Observatory looking out toward Picnic Point...

P1140890

... then down at Library Mall...

P1140903

... and later, out by the stadium...

P1140906

What an exerting day in Madison it was for us! My iPhone app counted 6.45 miles of walking on top of that 20+ miles of biking. True, I didn't swim, but I did take a shower.

Wow. You need a recovery day today.

No, don't get up. Rest. Let me bring you a nice cold glass of Gatorade. How about a Powerbar to go with that?

Ironically, I gained 2 pounds that day.

Must have been the Mocha Macchiato ice cream at the Union and the V Burger and St. B at Brasserie V.

Or something.

Weight gain can be a good thing. Especially when you're building muscle mass.

Ice cream, cheeseburger, and beer — hey, those muscle fibers aren't going to fuel themselves, are they?

Gaining 2 lbs - water weight or the Earth is getting heavier.

Looks like you had fun, and the price was unbeatable.

I watched a former student. That is, I tried to find the student in amongst the runners. May or may not have done that. I'm not sure.

Beautiful day yesterday, 'tho I was thinking the runners could've used a high thin cloud cover.

Where are their race numbers? Hubs has switched to adventure racing now but when he was a triathlete they always wrote their numbers on their legs.

@CStanley, some still had numbers visible on their legs, but I wonder if the water from the lake plus susnscreen application rubbed them off. They mostly had numbers and names on their bibs, mostly at waist level.

We'll just pass him there,
why should we even care?

Ann, I am so glad you went and caught the event. I asked you about it once and you said you tried to stay away.

I was up in Madison too and it was a gorgeous perfect day for Ironman. Had a great time showing around 2 friends new to Madison and to Ironman who also wanted to check out the campus for their eldest. I was really bummed to find the Terrace closed as I had told them about the view, brats, beer and ice cream and we were looking forward to it on a spectator break.

One thing you may not know is how much is raised for charity through these events. I know of 2 people racing yesterday who both raised over $30k for charity.

This race is a huge plus for Madison and the economy there. One of my favorite days of the year!!

Until Providence Equity Partners bought World Triathlon Corporation in 2008, the company behind the Ironman triathlons was missing quite a few opportunities to cash in on the sport’s soaring popularity among affluent Type-A people who want the bragging rights that come with swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2 miles, all in less than 17 hours.

Under Providence’s watch, Ironman has taken steps such as reclaiming races for which it was simply licensing the Ironman name for a fee, going into new markets more quickly and adding races, and expanding its selection of popular branded merchandise. (Its Timex watch is the best-selling sports watch around.) The result has been a sevenfold increase in its annual revenue, jumping to more than $150 million.

Last week, Ironman closed on a $240 million financing, most of which will go to paying Providence a dividend, the first time the sponsor is taking one. The debt left World Triathlon highly leveraged and earned a “B” junk rating from Standard & Poor’s because of the company’s exposure if the economy sours. But the financing, which was oversubscribed, also reflects all the untapped potential Providence still sees in an investment it is likely to hang on to for a few more years.

My son-in-law did a 1/2 iron man in Williamsburg, VA in June in 85 degree weather. He was whipped at the end. It took him almost a week to recover. It was his second. He and my daughter are planning another in the fall. Ouch. Need to be FIT.

Looks like a lovely day and a fun time with a colorful, diverse crowd. Next time paddleboard out yourself!

"Next time paddleboard out yourself! "

Good idea!

I am mightily impressed by the number of participants my age (and older) who train, enter, compete, and finish the Ironman. Some even with highly respectable results. Great athleticism.

I'm pretty sure that's called stalking. ;)

Regardless, it sounds exhausting. Did my part for making America healthy by doing a good brisk sit for 10 hours of football.
