Shot, right in the gun.

"An off-duty sheriff's deputy under attack managed to fire his gun and made a 'one in a billion' shot. The deputy's bullet traveled up the barrel of a suspect's gun, colliding with the cartridge inside and lodging itself there."

Wasn't there a "Mythbusters" on this notion? I thought they disproved the possibility of this happening?

(Those guys loved guns and they knew the audience did too. They did shows about physically dodging bullets, and I think there was one about shooting an opposing sniper through his scope. But I thought that they did one about shooting into the barrel of an opposing gun and they got nothing more than a bunch of messed up guns. Even when they had bench-mounted guns facing each other, lined up carefully in a lab with a laser.)

Guns don't kill guns; people kill guns.

@Chuck
What a buffoon.

This, or something almost as difficult - shooting a pistol out of a bad guy's grip, was common in the old west. I've seen it in a hundred old movies.

Lone Ranger did it all the time.

Story from some recent DVD watching

A man was shot but a bible in his shirt pocket stopped the bullet and protected his heart.

If he'd had another bible over his face, he'd be alive today.

Has anyone besides me realized that this could not have happened unless the perp's gun was pointed directly at the deputy?

It may be a "one in a billion shot" but I recollect reading about it happening during WWII in my Dad's old "Yank" magazines. It happened at least twice during the Vietnam War, once to an American soldier and once in a killshot made by legendary Smerican sniper Sergeant Carlos Hathcock. Gunny Hathcock actually put his round through the eyepiece of the enemy's telescopic sight.

As Maxwell Smart would have said: The old bullet in the barrel trick!

Everyone realizes that. So?

@Curious George, I rather doubt your conclusion.

Common sense gun control for cops.

Aim for the barrel....

Shooting the gun out of a bad guy's hand used to be such a highly used cliche on TV and movie Westerns that some anti-gun people actually think it is a reasonable possibility in the real world.

It is not.
