"Hillary Clinton danced with Paul McCartney while Jimmy Buffett played 'Cheeseburger in Paradise' during a fundraiser at his house..."

So beautifully, tragically tone deaf.

And the tweet is so perfect, right down to the potential for misreading "per pool," which got me picturing Paul and Hillary dancing by a swimming pool. If only pools could talk! And there's Jimmy in a lounge chair strumming his guitar and croaking about "a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat."

That called to mind the delightfully phony old picture of Hillary and Bill, her husband, dancing on the beach in their swimsuits back in 1998....
It was early January of 1998, and her husband was preparing for his deposition in Paula Jones's sexual-harassment suit. During their New Year's vacation in the Virgin Islands, the presidential couple were "caught" dancing together on the beach. In Bill's arms, Hillary gazed lovingly at her affectionate husband, her 50-year-old body revealed in all its bathing-suited glory. Most middle-aged women dread leaving a dressing room in a bathing suit, yet Hillary readily posed for a photo bound to grace front pages around the world. It was a perfect façade of normal matrimony, and succeeded brilliantly in distracting attention from the Jones suit. I remember thinking, "Wow, it's true that she will do absolutely anything for the sake of political survival."...

... a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat...

ADDED: I hear the message: Talk of cheeseburger. No wiener!

Weiner.

No Weiner. Cheeseburger.

"Wow, it's true that she will do absolutely anything for the sake of political survival." Correct. And this is the woman Americans want to elect?

Of course, her single-minded pursuit of power, to the exclusion and sacrifice of anyone and anything, makes the pool message less "tragic." Take-away: Hill danced with Paul. The anointed approve.

It is amazing. Hillary may be the first president elected by her own media. She does not have to campaign, she doesn't have to do press conferences. She only has to keep begging for money and the democrat media will paint it glowingly.

"Artists are lefties. Anybody with sense gets a real job. Those without sense become artists, and a very few make it owing to talent. So there you are, talented musicians are lefties."

My theory on why most artists (including singers and actors and other entertainers) are leftists and most athletes are rightists is how their own experience has been with success. To make it as an athlete, there's some inborn talent but from the beginning they get ahead through consistent hard work, and when they are beaten they can chalk it up to someone working harder than them (running faster, making the catch, etc.). Success in sports is more easily attributed to effort, even when there is some luck involved.

With entertainment, there's plenty of hard work but you usually see success as a result of a lucky break--you can toil away at your act or art without getting success, and success seems more random (why some actors make it big despite being less talented than some who never quite make it). Success in entertainment often seems to result from the whims of powerful people (talent agents, producers and promoters) rather than a 1 to 1 relationship with the effort put in.

So based on that, athletes probably see the world as one of a meritocracy, where you get what you put in, and entertainers probably see it as one of good or bad fortune and the unfairness of connections getting you ahead. So the former tend to buy into conservative ideas, and the latter tend to buy into leftist ideas.

Just my theory, anyway.

rhhardin said...

It almost always matters which gender you are.

There was a movie back in the '80's called "The Stuff" in the sci-fi genre that featured aliens starting a marketing campaign to get people to eat an ice-cream looking substance sold in pint containers. Once they started they were hooked and turned into alien zombies.

If they're smart, they'll keep their mouths shut even if they're leftists. Why alienate an audience? Tim McGraw's a liberal, but he's been pretty good at not Dixie Chicking himself out of country music. Same goes for Taylor Swift.

From 'The Community of Color Gazette':

"Local Woman of Color Throws Fundraiser at Home"

Latisha Wells, a Black Woman in our Community of Color, thre a fundraiser at her home Wednesday evening.

"Yes, yes I did," Ms. Wells said when asked about throwing the fundraiser. "I had cookies and cupcakes and orange and grape sodas."

How did Ms. Wells get word out for her fundraiser?

"Mostly at the laundromat, I guess. But pretty much everybody I knew, I told them. I told them there'd be free soda and baked goods."

Randall Moore, a neighbor of Ms. Wells, attended the fundraiser and confirmed Ms. Well's story.

"There were cupcakes: I know, I had two. I drank some grape soda, too."

Did Mr. Moore contribute to Ms. Wells' fundraiser?

"Well, I been kind of tight on money, but I managed to give what I could."

When asked how much that amount was, Mr. Moore turned serious.

"None of your f**king business," he replied.

Ms. Wells says that, although she did not raise as much as she hoped for, every bit counts.

"I didn't raise as much as I hoped for, but money's money. It was eighteen dollars I didn't have before, right?"

When asked where the funds were to go, Ms. Wells paused for a moment.

"To my electric bill, I guess. I can't afford to have them turn off my power again."

So there it is: a Story of Change in our Community of Color. For more stories like this please read 'The Community of Color Gazette'.

I think artists do tend to be lefties (and, yes, the smart ones don't indulge their political appetites too much, because why alienate your fans?). And I think Brando is right, one reason is that they experience success as a bit magical. Talent and effort still matter, but luck (and the apparent luck of good networking) matters a lot as well.

But I would add another factor that explains the lefty tendency for artists, and that is emotion. Artists mostly tap into the non-linear, non-verbal side of things. Sentiment and mood matter greatly. Strict logic, empiricism, data? Faugh.

Since lefty attitude is based on feelings not logic, artists are naturally vulnerable.

IMHO.

I was back where I grew up because my almost 95 year old father was in rehab. At lunch and dinner they played music in the dining room, and it alternated between country western and Golden Oldies, and on the big TV, they had trivia about the artists whose songs were being played. Most everyone there is gray or white haired. I thought Golden Oldies were odd for people of my father's generation, who preferred Sinatra and Big Band music. Then, reading that, I realized that this is the music of the late war babies and early Baby Boomers, who are now gray and white haired (except for Crooked Hillary, Trump, etc), and the primary demographic for that facility. In other words, they are mostly my age, or a couple years older.

They have a locked Altheimers wing, but one of the tragedies are the couple of women roaming around who are maybe headed there. I don't think that the Baby Boomers, like me, are really ready to get old yet. Most of our generation are still active - maybe not as active as Trump, but more so than Crooked Hillary. My next brother is still ski racing, and he will soon be on Medicare. But that rehab facility reminds me that many are not.

More BS of the shot straight from the horse's mouth:

In her autobiography "Living History," Clinton described the incident: "One afternoon midway through the trip, Bill and I put on our bathing suits and ventured down the beach for a swim. Unbeknownst to us, a photographer from Agence France-Presse, the French wire service, was hiding in the bushes on a public beach across the bay. He must have had a powerful telephoto lens, because the next day a photo of us slow-dancing on the beach appeared in newspapers around the world...Obviously the incident raised questions about security as well as privacy. If you're close enough to take a picture with a telephoto lens, if you're close enough to shoot a gun with a scope. Bill wasn't upset. He liked the photo."

When Hillary Clinton re-launched her campaign Saturday she said Republicans are "all singing the same old song — a song called 'Yesterday'" — a Beatles song over five decades old, which the Rubio campaign was quick to point out.

The Beatles song was released in September, 1965.

Hillary's "yesterday" reference was also unoriginal, for as the Washington Examiner pointed out, Marco Rubio said at his own announcement: "Just yesterday, a leader from yesterday began a campaign for president by promising to take us back to yesterday" referencing Hillary Clinton's announcement the day before.

"But yesterday is over, and we are never going back," said Rubio.

I think that plays a part too--a lot of emotion and sometimes even mental abnormalities can be a boost to an artist's creativity (look at Jackson Pollock) and so more emotional people may gravitate to such fields. The emotional side of things can support leftist endeavors, where intentions matter more than cold, hard results.

In a just world that 'iconic' photo of Hill & Bill would be updated with them dancing in their conjugal prison cell.

If Trump were to somehow actually get elected he should take a tip from Glenn Reynolds and get Congress to reinstate the Truman era Hollywood Tax. Add to that cable unbundling, a severance tax for using the airways and selling off the frequencies of the NPR and PBS frequencies and busting up the cable monopolies along with serious IRS examinations of the studios along with taxing all of the entertainment industry perqs as imputed income and inside two years they will all become Republicans.

The Hollywood-Media Lefties don't need to worry themselves; Trump probably won't win and even if he did and Congress remains Republican the Republicans are too stupid, cowardly and probably too corrupt to do this.

Therefore this shot was pre-approved. If no other similar pictures appeared in other papers, by equally wily and enterprising photogs, why not? Was this guy just lucky or was it an orchestrated "casual moment"? My guess is yes.

He has a few surprisingly good songs and no one took themselves too seriously and the tickets were always cheap, so: fun.

About 5 or 6 years ago he stopped going to Lakewood and started coming around every other year or so to one of the normal indoor concert venues--I think he still usually sells out but I can't imagine it's anywhere near as fun and I'd bet it's a different crowd.
