Facing the reality of a Trump presidency: "Donald Trump’s Victory Is Met With Shock Across a Wide Political Divide."

That's the headline at the NYT website for an article that looks like this in the printed newspaper:

The photos in the 2 places are different. On the website, there's actually a picture of Hillary, seen from the back, her arms outstretched and touching the shoulders of 2 men — unidentified "supporters." She needs support as she exits from the the center of the national stage.

Meanwhile, here's Trump, marching onto the stage. He's clapping his hands at the head of an army of Trumpions. If you were here at Meadhouse, you would have heard my spontaneous singing of "Trump, Trump, Trump, the Trumps are marching," to the tune of "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp":
Tramp, tramp, tramp, the boys are marching,
Cheer up comrades they will come,
And beneath the starry flag
We shall breathe the air again,
Of the freeland in our own beloved home.
That's a Civil War song, written to give hope to war prisoners. Speaking of the starry flag, I'm seeing this:

That's featured at another NYT article, "'Not Our President': Protests Spread After Donald Trump’s Election":
Thousands of people across the country marched, shut down highways, burned effigies and shouted angry slogans on Wednesday night to protest the election of Donald J. Trump as president.
Speaking of marching.
The protests on Wednesday came just hours after Hillary Clinton, in her concession speech, asked supporters to give Mr. Trump a “chance to lead.”...
And Obama, for his part, had said "We are all now rooting for his success...The peaceful transfer of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy.”
In New York, crowds converged at Trump Tower, on Fifth Avenue at 56th Street in Midtown Manhattan, where the president-elect lives.

They chanted “Not our president” and “New York hates Trump” and carried signs that said, among other things, “Dump Trump.”...
Outside the man's home.
The demonstrations forced streets to be closed, snarled traffic and drew a large police presence. They started in separate waves from Union Square and Columbus Circle and snaked their way through Midtown.
Stopping the flow of traffic in NYC... that might not be the best way to build political support. Ask Chris Christie.

But the protests are a predictable and an inevitable part of American election expression. One can only imagine the opposition that would have confronted Hillary Clinton, had she won. More important is how the winners handle themselves. I'm seeing grace, modesty, and respect. Or that's what I hope I'm seeing. I think we should expect and demand the best from Trump. As a newcomer to politics, he invented a way to win the presidency. He saw how to win, and even if you think he made some scurrilous choices, it worked, and he won. The candidacy is over now. That job is done. That building is built. You can look back on it and say what you like and don't like about it, but he got the job done. The new job is being President, and I want to believe that he's applying his unusual mind to the invention of a way to be an excellent President. I'm not one of the not-our-President protesters. I'm a citizen who knows damn well he's the next President and I'm going to be insisting that he excel at what he's undertaken to do.

Yes, one can. I'm imagining a lot less flag-burning and traffic blocking.

Also - were the Trumpsters to hit the streets in similar fashion after a Clinton victory, we would likely read - "America Erupts in Hatred and Anger" etc, etc... at the same source.

campy said...

"Reality"? We're getting ahead of ourselves. The election for president takes place next month in the various state capitals. For the Clintons, the answer to Life in the White House, a Universe of continued eight-figure checks, and Everything is: 42. As in 42 Trump electors flipped.

Unknown said...

Yes Campy, put your hopes into flipping 42 Trump Electors. 43, really, since one Washington Elector has vowed to not vote Her Highness.

Trying to steal the Electoral College is a great response to a charge from Trump that the election is rigged. Let's say you succeed: do you think you'll get any cooperation at all from Republicans or independents, who will not be pleased that the election was stolen?

Remind me again when the right shut down the streets outside of Obama's Chicago house and burned him in effigy? When did the right fill the streets of major cities to protest Obama's election?

Remind me of when the right caused huge riots outside of Hillary's campaign appearances?

Yeah yeah yeah. Protests are part of America. But the protesting left is exhausting.

TreeJoe said...

If this continues for 2 more nights, Obama needs to step in and make a public statement in support of Trump, against the protesters, and enforce the law.

Yes, flag burning is legal. But there are open threats to kill the president elect of the united states. One protester tried to shut down a highway only to get hit by a car. This is not "normal" protesting. There was so much hand-wringing about Trump not accepting the election results, let's see some leadership from our current leaders on dems not accepting them.

I say give them a couple days to vent. They've gone through Denial and shock, and anger is the next step. Eventually acceptance occurs, sooner rather than later.

The problem is in the definition of "excel", isn't it?

I utterly empathize with your take on this, Ann, but the reality is that for some, their definition of "excel" as president would be to utterly reverse the platform Trump ran on.

So we must be resigned to more theoretically objective goals, such as "operate within the law" and so forth.

What gets into you, to make you imagine any equivalence at all in the two sides' behaviors?

Ah, yes – I remember it well – the Tea Party riots after Obama’s historic victories in 2008 and 2012 … oh, wait. Actually nothing of the sort happened at all. Us anti-Obama folks meekly accepted Obama’s victories with nary a demonstration, flag-burning, freeway traffic disruption, etc.

So … I am wondering what the fuck Ms. Althouse is fucking talking about … Must be that academia bubble she lives in. That and her understandable grief over the totally unexpected Hillary defeat and outrage at the phony, reassuring polls that gave her and the other Hillary supporters a false sense of security. It’s causing her to have some very imaginative hallucinations.

Folks grieve and exhibit anger in various ways – some march and riot and some imagine unrealistic bullshit about Trump supporters rioting in the streets in a far-fetch hypothetical. We need to allow her to go through her personal stages of grief with a minimum of ridicule. Show compassion, she needs a safe space now.

i seem to remember the birther 'movement' trying, trying ad nauseum to delegitimize his presidency.

You mean the rumor that Hillary started as she was having her pant-suited ass beaten like a drum by Obama during the 2008 primaries? THAT “birther movement?” I thought the Left had forgiven Hillary for that particular piece of rumor-mongering but past resentments die hard, eh?

The coverage of these protests is neutral-to-sympathetic and I am CERTAIN any similar protests against a Dem elected President (much less the first woman so elected!) would be much harsher.

She's had mine since she took over the helm.

"And isn't Barron around 10 or so? He's so tall!"

Barron is 10, and he is very tall. It's an interesting look in that suit with that hair. Androgynous... if you think of him as being 15 or 16. But he is a child. A very tall child in a suit.

Looks like some raggamuffins that need a real job.

Don't worry, better times with better ideas are ahead.

Soon these kids will be moving out of their parents' basement and becoming productive members of a new vibrant economy.

He's quite lovely, and I hope for the best for him. What an incredible adolescence he faces! The Obama girls had each other and they had a father who was, for the most part, loved. Trump is such an odd character and the emotion toward him is very weird. That poor little boy. Rich tall boy.

The "protests if Clinton had won" would probably look like the protests when Obama won. Which... were rather timid affairs.

I think this is wrong. The USA has learned if it did not know that intractable opposition is the way forward for politics. Fight them on the skies, on the beaches, in the streets, in the kitchens, etc.

He has a bunch of older half siblings who were obviously raised well and will be both siblings/parent to him and he does have loving parents too.

"The USA has learned if it did not know that intractable opposition is the way forward for politics."

-- What are you talking about? Republicans won because they offered solutions and compromises, and then Democrats shut them out, most noticeably on the ACA. Each step of the way, Republicans offered Democrats a chance to reach compromise, and each step, Democrats said: "We won" and ignored them.

What we learned is that you can't be a rigid ideologue. Clinton was, and she lost. Trump, for all his flaws, is a fairly moderate Republican, especially on social issues, and won.

"Intractable opposition" is why Democrats kept losing to Bush, and then won with Obama, who promised to bring unity instead of the Dean scream/Kerry elitism.

If anyone learned the lesson stated, they just weren't paying attention.

I predict Barron will be a likable charming man as an adult because he will have grown up learning via the practice of pleasing his older siblings. I see that in my youngest uncle who had much older siblings and my youngest brother who is much younger than his siblings.

Actually, the same thing could have been said about Trump when he was young who was very good looking but not in a rugged sort of way and the same probably of his second oldest son.

After a while all this becomes boring and predictable - if you're old enough and not senile. When the Dems get elected its "The nation has spoken, lets support our new leader push his agenda" - when the Repubs get elected (Reagan, Bush, Bush) its "An anxious nation looks for the President to heal the divide and reach across the aisle"

Pretty soon we'll be hearing about "the tyranny of the majority" and how filibuster is once again a "bulwark of the Republic".

Trump got elected despite the vicious lies and smears of the liberals and MSM. He owes them nothing. And after Obama's arrogance and executive orders and Reid arrogance and petty partisanship and playing by Alinksy's rules - the Repubs owe them nothing.

Trump got elected to do certain things, and "reaching across the aisle" to a bunch of assholes who called him a Nazi, fascist, racist, stupid, clownish, evil, rapist and crooked, isn't one of the them.

Bruce Hayden said...

I really don't have that many worries about Barron. One of the interesting things that Trump's older kids said about him is that he made it a point to bring them to the office on the weekends, where they would play around all his deal making. They have fond memories about it, and no one was surprised that they went into business with him, and were successful at it. I think that his father will make sure that he gets a lot of time around him, maybe in situations that other Presidents have not had their kids involved. Still, Trump is really too old to be raising a kid this age.

Kudos to President Obama for his nice words about Donald Trump and George W. Bush. He specifically said he was following the example that President Bush set, when we transfer power to the other party. Very high road, very impressive, very presidential.

Also, Donald Trump is always gracious when he wins. He's a sore loser, a bad loser, a horrible loser. But when he wins? He's always gracious and nice to his vanquished opponents. I admire that about him, it's a very American trait.

If I were king, what would I do?
Suggestions for Trump?
My mind boggles at all the thing I think I would do, and I don't know if I could do them.
Fix the regulatory state! It's in the Executive Branch, right? So I can do whatever I want, right? Guess he'll find out. Can't fire most of 'em, they're Civil Service? Can he close down divisions by Executive Order? Certainly he can cancel the previous president's Executive Orders.
Repeal Obamacare? I well know that parts of it need to be replaced or kept (guaranteed issue seems to be very popular, and extremely expensive.) I would repeal it anyhow, all of it together, starting a year from today. That gets the political hard part out of the way without the pain hitting now, and then the politicians in Congress on both sides of the aisle can figure out what to send him as a replacement. I don't know, though, if there's a way to stop them from renewing it for "just one more year", at the end of the year. Perhaps include in the repeal an immediate end to the preparatory steps by the insurance companies for the following year; that would probably sabotage a last-minute extension.
Rework our foreign commitments? I would tell NATO, and Japan, and South Korea, that we expect them to pay their way from now on, with every country contributing a similar fraction of their GDP to defense. If they want us to leave, we will.
Reform education in the United States? I would totally reorient the Department of Education, getting rid of most of its functions. Announce that charter schools have as much right to federal support as public schools. Send out a "dear colleague" letter or two to states and schools across the country that there will be no federal support for any school district that cannot fire bad teachers.
There is so much to do! I wonder how much of it can really get done. Here're some of Paul Ryan's plans: http://time.com/4564832/paul-ryan-speech-donald-trump-election/. Sounded good to me; I hope there's some overlap with Donald Trump's plans.

dreams said...

No, he is not too old. Older dads can be great dads. Trump doesn't have to be young enough to play basketball with him or play catch or any other physical activity with him.

Grandparents are not too old to have grandchildren?

Scott Adams:
Yes, yes, I realize Trump supporters say bad things about Clinton supporters too. I don’t defend the bad apples on either side. I’ll just point out that Trump’s message is about uniting all Americans under one flag. The Clinton message is that some Americans are good people and the other 40% are some form of deplorables, deserving of shame, vandalism, punishing taxation, and violence. She has literally turned Americans on each other. It is hard for me to imagine a worse thing for a presidential candidate to do.

I’ll say that again.

As far as I can tell, the worst thing a presidential candidate can do is turn Americans against each other. Clinton is doing that, intentionally.

Intentionally.

As I often say, I don’t know who has the best policies. I don’t know the best way to fight ISIS and I don’t know how to fix healthcare or trade deals. I don’t know which tax policies are best to lift the economy. I don’t know the best way to handle any of that stuff. (And neither do you.) But I do have a bad reaction to bullies. And I’ve reached my limit.

I was watching Fox and Friends this morning and they had a correspondent in a diner in Florida who was interviewing some senior citizens on why they had voted for Trump. I felt sorry for those people because you just know that some leftist is going to find out their address/phone numbers/email/facebook/etc, put it up on the Internet, and then they will be harassed. By people who will feel virtuous about doing so. It is impossible for a democracy to continue to function in such an environment. Something is going to break.

It says a lot about a father when his kids want to join in the family business. With most families I know, the kids can't wait to get out from under Daddy's thumb. My BIL worked in a feed store in Montana rather than take over his father's very successful shipping business in Seattle. He wanted no part of the ulcers and headaches. [He did, however, end up with a very nice trust fund].

That's something that always struck me when I look at these protests (BLM, Occupy, etc) is to pay attention to the professional signs (versus the handwritten on cardboard flavor. It's funny how they usually have ANSWER or RevCom at the bottom in a web address (and RevCom's the Revolutionary Communist Party of the US). I wonder if that would change if the city presented them with a bill for damages and police overtime after the next 'spontaneous protest'. and let them know that there's a lien against their assets for payment of said bill.
