Mickey Kaus on Sniggergate.

"Sniggered? You make the call!"

ADDED: I accept the apology.

He did snicker a bit, but as he admits it wasn't sexist snickering. He would have made the same instant, off the cuff, comment about a Male blogger.

"he admits it wasn't sexist snickering"

How is "admit" the right word?

Kaus was truly shocked that Ann Althouse would be the one to have crossed some imagined boundary in his Blog World. He did not know that Ann's courage is a real deal and not only an image she projects. He needs to watch Gran Tourino.

Not a snigger. More like a guffaw.

Kaus guffawed.

Perfectly decent apology, I think.

I admit that I am charming and devilishly handsome.

More importantly, does Althouse forgive him?

You f'ing lawyers are always so precise :) (I'm married to one as well)

How about:

"he claims it wasn't sexist, and I believe him"

When I read the word "snickered" in the NYT account I immediately thought, Mickey Kaus didn't snicker; only Andrew Sullivan snickered! Mickey simply asked if the two had met in person. It didn't sound to me like he was making fun of that possibility—as "snickering" implies. Seems to me he was simply voicing an awareness of the new way of "knowing" and "becoming known" that the Althouse/Meade nuptials suggest!

I'd be much more likely to accuse a man having a "mail-order bride." Lots of tradition there. Meade: How does it feel to be accused by Kaus of being a mail-order husband? Is that a real husband or Sears husband?

I was struck more by the alternate definitions of "Face time"

You "Admit" to not being sexist, since, of course, being sexist is a virtue.

Ian Faith: They're not gonna release the album... because they have decided that the cover is sexist.
Nigel Tufnel: Well, so what? What's wrong with bein' sexy? I mean there's no...
Ian Faith: Sex-IST!
David St. Hubbins: IST!

Bobbi Flekman: You put a *greased naked woman* on all fours with a dog collar around her neck, and a leash, and a man's arm extended out up to here, holding onto the leash, and pushing a black glove in her face to sniff it. You don't find that offensive? You don't find that sexist?
Ian Faith: This is *1982*, Bobbi, c'mon!
Bobbi Flekman: That's *right*, it's 1982! Get out of the '60s. We don't have this mentality anymore.
Ian Faith: Well, you should have seen the cover they *wanted* to do! It wasn't a glove, believe me.

I still say Mickey was taken aback by the news. Not that he had a serious thing for Althouse, but maybe that he'd miss the company of another older, single blogger out there. And that it highlighted his own situation, where it's no secret that Mickey's on the hunt.

Plus, as this short Bloggingheads clip from the previous Kaus-Wright diavlog shows, Mickey is risk-averse and is the type to see the morbid downside (even compared to Bob Wright) of all kinds of hook-ups. Maybe that's why he's still single?

Just a guess.

The actual you make the call "guffaw" video.

Jump ahead on the "guffaw" clip and notice how Mickey goes on to confuse Althouse for McCardle at the end of this Bloggingheads clip, well after the Althouse discussion with Bob Wright is over.

"You are always on my mind..."

If I could make fun of Mort during Lent I would say:

"If Mort were awake he would say sniggergate is racist."

But that would be wrong.

I am going to confession tonight.

The Power of the Times -he only apologizes after the NY Times makes the verb choice call. Heh.

Or maybe in saying it wasn't "sexist" snickering, he was *admitting* that he was, indeed, snickering.

Or a Safrican american.

Snigger is such a wussy old fashioned word. Like kerfuffle, fussbudget, trollop, rake, hussy, carpetbagger, rapscallion, whippersnapper, spinster...

The more up to date term for sniggered might be snarked.

Besides that term has Travis the chimp cartoon overtones to it so you would think the NYTimes editor would have chosen a softer synonym.

But I don't think he sniggered or snarked he merely questioned.

I give the marriage a year. Tops.

I didn't see it as snark or sniggering, just the way Mickey expresses himself. His laid back cynicism, speech patterns and mannerisms are typically LA.

Wright throws a fish eye at the camera ever so often as he moves around, it's not editorial either, but could be taken as such by a newbie viewer.
