See it?

DSC_0009

ADDED: As a few of you have seen, there's a groundhog. You may remember that a few days ago, there were 2 coyotes in the yard here (in Ohio) and they were gnawing on a groundhog. Yesterday, I saw a few groundhogs in the yard and running into that spooky old garage. Today, we were walking down in the meadow at dusk, and, just after Holly (the dog) chased after a deer, we saw a coyote in the tall grass. It was keeping an eye on us. Were there pups somewhere? Were there coyotes all over the place in that grass? We made our way back to the house. Would a beast suddenly lunge at our backs? No, we're here. Unscathed.

Stoat?

Ohio gives great sunset and sunrise lighting pics, owing to the visible sun reaching pretty near the horizon and lots of grass to catch the light.

It looks like a skunk, except they're supposed to be nocturnal.

I see the ubiquitous black dog in the background. Is that what we're supposed to be looking for?

On closer inspection, groundhog.

Is Althouse showing us a picture of a beaver?

It has about the right shape, but the tail doesn't look right, maybe we are seeing it edge-on.

I see a path that disappears short of its destination, yet the destination is in sight...

Perhaps encouraging the traveler to finish the trip without guidance?

Or does it show that all works of man are doomed to be overgrown?

But sometimes a muskrat is just a muskrat....

My goodness!

Meade is certainly well-hung!

I'm surprised Titus hasn't noticed!

It may be Otter from Meade's Animal House.

It's the Highlightsification of Ann Althouse.

Later this week she'll post two seemingly identical pictures and we'll have to find three differences between them à la Slylock Fox.

The shallow grave was what caught my eye...

I think Althouse is weakening in a spate of premarital remorse.

Nice beaver. You should get it stuffed.

It's a rare herd of grass-colored hedgehogs, sneaking up on its mortal enemy, the horrible tree-shaped bear.

I'm ready for my close-up, Ms. Althouse.

Pogo.....that was really very clever! kudos

Maureen Dowd gets caught plagiarizing and all Althouse gives us is a picture of a cat, or a photoshopped thylacine, or an immature montauk monster or something, characteristically out of focus? Come on, Maureen Dowd freakin' plagiarized, Professor Althouse, your feminine wit is needed to help everyone understand what happened on the pages of the NYT. . .

Ann, you guys need to be careful with the coyotes because they will ambush your dog with the dog knowing it. If you are in an area with known coyotes you need to at least carry a BB or pellet gun with you to scare them off.

"Please don't tell me I should be blogging about some other subject. If you have a tip on what I should blog, email me at annalthouse (at) gmail (dot) com. Otherwise, express yourself. Be interesting. You can digress, but digress creatively. Amuse us!"

But, Bob, I considered blogging that and rejected it. Looks inconsequential and accidental.

Prof A:

I meant no offense!

Come on, I threw out a Thylacine and Montauk monster references to show I was in the spirit of your post, attempting to guess what your cryptic animal pic was.

inconsequential I could buy, but accidental? Is that what you tell your students when the opening paragraph of an essay or thesis mirrors one that you received from another student a semester before, or one for sale on term papers.com? Or do thoroughly examine the paper in question, and talk to the student? My guess is your approach is closer to the latter!

Don't think thst urban coyotes attack full size people.

I am sure someone is keeping track.

Holly is pretty good size and should be safe, unless one of the coyotes is horny ....

JAL said...

Ummm. I'm not implyimg that Holly the dog is a person. Need an editor.

Ofc. Krupke said...

The thing to be wary about with coyotes is their tendency to leave their dynamite, giant springs and rocket skates lying around.

rhhardin said...

You don't have to outrun the coyote. You just have to outrun Meade.

Ann Althouse said...

"urban coyotes"

It's not urban here. And the coyote looked big.

Ann Althouse said...

Bigger than the dog.

It could be worse. You could have big, black, hairy wild boar running around like we do up here in northern Michigan.
